Late leveller earns Blues a derby draw

WHITBY Town hit an 89th leveller to earn a 2-2 draw with east coast rivals Scarborough Athletic last night.

And boss Harry Dunn told the Whitby Gazette he was pleased with the way the triallists played in an experimental side, in the first of Town's pre-season games.

After a competitive but uneventful first half in front of a crowd of nearly 400, local lad Darren Magill opened the scoring for the Blues three minutes after the interval.

Two goals in 11 minutes from Paul Routledge and Joel Hartley seemed to put Athletic – who play in the Northern Counties East League Premier Division – on course for victory.

But with time running out, Bob Ovington's curling shot crashed back off the underside of the bar and sub Mathew Brown tapped home into an empty net.

Dunn said he was pleased his side fought back and kept plugging away to earn a draw – and was also impressed with the quality of football on show.

Among the players who stood out were former Middlesbrough full-back Brian Close who Dunn described as "a typical UniBond League player who did very well" as well as goalscorers Magill and Brown.

Also wearing a blue jersey was Billy Logan – son of ex-Whitby defender and manager Dave Logan – who has been released by Blue Square Premier outfit Mansfield Town.

On Saturday, Whitby will bring in the senior players when they entertain Northern League side Dunston UTS.

"The senior players will all play tomorrow and we will mix and match with some of the lads we had on Tuesday night," said Dunn.

"The main thing is to get as much football in to as many players as we can before the UniBond League season starts on 15 August."

Whitby Town: Poskett, Close, Hussan, L Gildea, Hanson, Lyth, Brancatti, Exley, Jones, Logan, Davis. Subs: Magill, Lambert, Ovington, Brown, Snowdon.

Attendance: 375.
