Mulgrave Cricket Club’s second team started their Eskdale League home fixtures against Grosmont, but were badly hit by first team call-ups, holidays and work commitments.
They called up juniors Jordan Ingham and eight-year-old Sam Spenceley to make 11 players.
On a cold afternoon, Grosmont won the toss and asked Mulgrave to bat.
Mulgrave’s youngsters were soon in trouble against Grosmont’s bowlers with the pace and accuracy of Arron Liddle in particular proving difficult to handle.
Mulgrave soon slipped to 15-5 and were eventually all out for 66 with only the experienced A Spenceley (38) and captain C Spenceley (11) reaching double figures.
Despite Mulgrave’s best efforts with the ball, 66 was never going to be enough on a excellent batting wicket and fine unbeaten knocks by Arron Liddle and Stuart Knaggs saw Grosmont run out comfortable winners by nine wickets.
