Richard Howe and Will Donald were on form as Whitby 1sts claimed a crucial winning draw from their clash with Saltburn.

The 17-point haul that Paul Buck’s side took from the game, combined with Billingham Synthonia’s defeat to Blackhall, saw the men from the Turnbull Ground move into pole position in North Yorkshire and South Durham Division One.

Australian all-rounder Howe smashed 119 batting at number three, and with Ron Lyth, 34 not out, and James Fawcett, 33, also making useful contributions, the hosts finished on 235 for 7.

Donald then took over with the ball, claiming figures of 6-38 to leave Saltburn reeling, but a dogged 50 not out from Owen Tennant helped the visitors see out their 50 overs to close on 168/9.

The result leaves Whitby six points clear at the top of the table, with five games left to play.
