Good weather and leadership is match of the day!

TEN primary schools from the Whitby area attended the under nines football tournament at Stakesby school on a glorious late summers day: Danby, West Cliff, Lealholm, Egton, Airy Hill, East Whitby, Ruswarp, St Hilda's, St Heddas and Lythe.

The tournament was run by young leaders from Whitby Community College who refereed and kept score throughout the afternoon.

Two groups of five each played four matches with the winner of each group automatically qualifying for the Ryedale and Whitby Sports Partnership final at Ryedale School.

The two winning teams were Lythe and East Whitby – both teams playing outstanding football throughout the afternoon. The third place at the final would be taken by the best second place team from the two groups.

The two second place teams were Airy Hill and Danby – both with 10 points, so goal difference would decide the winner – both had +13 goals.

Eventually Danby went through having scored more goals in total throughout the afternoon.

School Sports Co-ordinator Pete Woolley said: "A fantastic afternoon of football was enjoyed by all the children.

"A combination of good weather and excellent leadership by the Whitby Community College students helped the tournament run smoothly."
