Weather plays havoc with alliance

THE weather is still playing havoc with golfing fixtures both at home and elsewhere in the region.

The Scarborough & District Alliance had been due to play at South Cliff on 27 January, but it was postponed until 3 February, then cancelled altogether.

Neither the Midweek Stableford nor the Saturday Stableford were played at Whitby.

Happily, Sunday’s Fourball Betterball did take place over 15 holes on a breezy morning, and Mike Clarkson and Luke Asbury were worthy winners with a nett 60.

Men’s captain Terry Wilkinson, getting near to the end of his year in office, came second with partner Kevin Barker with a score of 63, the

same as Mike Coates and Michael McElhinney.

Fingers are crossed for the next Alliance meeting, due to be played at Filey on Sunday (10 Feb).

Whitby’s team is: 9.36 Kieran Noble & Andy Pearson; 9.44 Simon Walker & Alex Wiggins; 9.52 Ian Wiggins & Alistair Lyth; 10.00 Dean Bennett & Adam Lyth; 11.28 Kevin Barker & Eric Wilson; 11.36 James Jewell & Simon Grant; 11.44 Bob Scott & Steve Ellis; reserve Peter Easton.

The weekly draw for £100 in the 200 Club was won by Don Stanley.

Members please note that the annual general meeting of the club will take place in the clubhouse on Wednesday 20 February at 7.30pm.

Tony’s Tip:

This week, C is for chip (and run).

In my eyes the best and safest option to play around the green when the situation allows.

As long as there is some room to work with and space for the ball to run out, playing the shot with a fairly straight-faced club (maybe a 7 iron), keeping the wrists firm, landing the ball halfway to the hole and letting it run the rest of the way has a huge safety margin.

The key with any of these shots is don’t try to lift the ball - stroke it forwards and the club’s natural loft will do the rest.
