Kerr wins Stableford with a flourish

AFTER a series of high finishes Mark Kerr won the Midweek Stableford last Wednesday with 45 points, giving him a three-point cushion over Mike Rothwell and Tam McConville.

Howard Drake had 40, with Andy Lawler, Les Underwood, Alan Atkinson and Brian Grange on 39.

John Carter had 38 ahead of Alistair Lyth, Dave Upton, Chris Wood, Simon Grant, Richard Appleton and John Littleton on 37.

Saturday’s Stableford had a very close finish, with the top five players having to be separated over the last nine holes after all scoring 41 points.

Alistair Lyth finished first, with Les Spedding second, Tam McConville third and Chris Wood fourth.

Andy Pearson was the unlucky player pushed out of the prizes.

Kieran Noble had 40 points, with Les Underwood, Dave Upton, Steve Swales, Dave Kirk and Martin Shackleton on 39.

This competition has seen a few changes to the best ten cards on Saturdays which runs all winter.

Tam McConville still leads with an impressive 399. Alistair Lyth has moved into second place with 376, ahead of Ivan Ross on 372, Billy Hardy on 370, Kevan Little on 369 and Mike Rothwell and Mark Kerr on 368.

Dave Collett and Tam McConville won Sunday’s Fourball Betterball with 63. Dean Bennett and Michael Coates took second place on 64, beating Paul Ventress and Adrian Brown over the back nine.

Colin Rutland and Simon Walker were fourth on 66.

The Scarborough and District Alliance holds the next round of the Pennant at North Cliff tomorrow, with Whitby lying in joint fourth position.

Whitby’s team is: 8.32 Simon Walker and Kevin Barker; 8.40 Ian Wiggins and Bob Scott; 8.48 Dean Bennett and Tam McConville; 8.56 Dave Upton and Simon Grant; 10.40 Colin Upton and Mark Kerr; 10.48 Paul Ventress and Steve Ellis; 10.56 Martin Shackleton and Eric Wilson.

Reserves: Mike Clarkson and Peter Easton. The following round is at Bridlington on Saturday 18th February and the entry list is on the notice board.

Members should note that there will be an EGM in the clubhouse at 7.30pm on Wednesday 15 February and this will be followed immediately by the AGM.

Dave Upton won £200 in the monthly draw in the 200 Club.

Tony’s Tip: At this time of the year, with heavy, cold winds, solid striking of the ball is even more important than usual to see the ball staying on line to the target.

There is no single absolute secret to this, but keeping your head steady until the ball has been struck is a big help.

What I like to do is look at the very back of the ball at address and keep looking at it through the swing until impact.

Once the ball has been hit you can let your head swivel and move forwards a bit to complete the swing in comfort.
