Goathland Hunt tackle Heartbeat ride
GOATHLAND Hunt members kept their fingers crossed for good weather when organising their Heartbeat ride.
The day before was perfect – sunny, no wind, really good going, but the same day as the Great North Run.
Early morning low cloud and steady rain with heavier showers made the hunt members think no-one would turn up. However, hunt supporters and endurance riders are made of sterner stuff.
By 9.30am, the mist was clearing and the rain had settled to a drizzle.
As the first rider left the very exposed venue at Greenend, near Goathland, it was at least visible across the valley.
By the time the riders had dropped into the valley to Grosmont and made their way up the other side of the valley and over the moor to the skyline on the Stape Road the weather had improved so they could see the wonderful views for miles and miles of TV's Heartbeat countryside.
Riders then made their way down and across the valley to Hunt House and onto the moor, passing the outskirts of Goathland before heading out onto the moor (past Greengrass's farm) and onto the top again, dropping down to Moor Gates and back along the other side of the valley finishing with a long stretch of moorland grasstrack to canter home.
This was the first year of the ride of 15 miles and everyone was enthusiastic and keen to return again next year.
The Goathland Hunt committee thank the landowners, keepers and volunteers who made the ride enjoyable for all and for the riders who turned up despite the weather.
