Wintry woe wipes out Whitby’s sports fixtures

THE entire Whitby area’s sports fixtures were wiped out by wintry weather at the weekend.

Whitby Town’s money-spinning league match at home to well supported FC United of Manchester was postponed on Saturday morning due to a frozen pitch.

A gate of 1,000 was possible with FC United fans already in Whitby the previous night.

However, the game is now likely to be played midweek instead which will drastically affect the attendance and mean the club misses out a financial bonanza.

The entire Eskvale and Cleveland League and Teesside League programmes were wiped out, along with the Scarborough and District Saturday League. The rugby fixtures at The Showfield for Whitby Rugby Club 1sts and 2nds were also affected.

Junior fixtures yesterday also fell victim to the snow and ice.
