Whitby youngsters ‘better than Manchester United’
A YOUNG Whitby football team have beaten a record set by Manchester United’s Edwin van der Sar in keeping 12 consecutive clean sheets.
Fishburn under nines have not conceded a single goal all season and already have an impressive plus 40 goal difference after Sunday’s 3-0 win over bottom side Whinney Banks.
The feat betters Manchester United’s achievement in 2008-2009 when Dutch stopper van der Sar racked up 11 clean sheets in a row, helping them to fend off the advances of hated rivals Liverpool and land the Premier League trophy.
Although van der Sar had the luxury of having the likes of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic protecting him, Park’s goalie Tyler Henshaw can also count himself lucky to have such a good defence.
They are the only side in the Teesside Junior Football Alliance who have a record of 0 in the goals conceded column.
They could also equal a record this Sunday (29 Jan) for the amount of winning games by an FA team from start of the season.
Manager Adam Bell said this week: “We are so proud of how the lads have done in their first season in this league.
“We can’t knock the commitment and effort they have put in.”
Another windy fixture for Fishburn, who have won all 12 games in division three, made the going difficult for both teams.
Banks elected to play with the wind behind them in the first half but failed to capitalise on the advantage.
Instead, Banks’ defence had to work hard to cope with the constant attacks from the Fishburn forward trio of Hewison, Finn and Burnett.
Midway through the half, a run from Hewison from midway in his own half finished with a pass to Finn who planted the ball safely in the back of the net.
Hewison was again involved in a battle for the ball in Banks half which after some bold tackling saw the ball come loose and Hewison found the back of the net.
Banks’ brief forays up front were kept in check with the defensive trio of Humble, Collier and man of the match Joseph Hutchinson.
In the second half with the wind behind them, it was Fishburn’s chance to use the advantage but solid defending kept denying Fishburn another goal. But a lovely back heel from Hewison to Finn saw Finn get his second of the match.
Banks declined to play the second match so a match against parents was hastily organised which saw some robust tackling on both sides and man of the match awarded to Ms C Blackburn.
