Whitby RFC stretched their lead at the top of the Saturday League’s second division to six points after ending Filey’s unbeaten record.

Trailing by a goal at half-time from a long throw and flick into the net, the Whitby side were second best in the first half on Saturday and outmuscled by a physical side.

But a change at half-time and a change in formation turned the game around.

Welham’s superb free-kick levelled matters and some Sullivan magic and a good finish put club in front with 15 minutes left.

Kilpatrick then sealed the win, finishing off a good move with 10 minutes left.

RFC boss Ste Mothersdale said after the game: “This win was massive for us today.

“We simply had to win to put it in our hands.

“I maybe got the selection wrong in the first half, going for a more pacey attacking line up but we changed it at half-time and we turned it around.

“We can’t get carried away with this win as we still have to go to Filey and have two tough away games coming up in the next two weeks so we concentrate on that now.”

Man of the match: Benn Sullivan.
