Whitby Town’s new EvoStik League season will kick off at home to Stourbridge on Saturday August 15.

This will be followed three days later with a trip to old foes Blyth Spartans as the Blues aim to hit the ground running.

Whitby will go to promoted Darlington 1884 on Boxing Day with the return at the Turnbull bound to be a crowd-puller, on Easter Monday.

The start of the new league season always brings fresh excitement and Blues boss Darren Williams is keen for his troops to start well.

“It’s important we get off to a good start but not necessarily the be all and end all,” he told the Whitby Gazette.

“Last season, FC United of Manchester started poorly and ended up winning the league.

“The thing is not to get too downhearted if we start badly as the games come thick and fast. We do stress that we want a good start as it fares us well.

“If we don’t, we need to work on it and get to where we want to be.”

The Blues began their pre-season games last night and new striker Mikey Roberts was on target as they held League Two Hartlepool to an entertaining 1-1 draw.

Williams said: “The first few games, we’ll be finding our feet and will have a look at everyone as best we can.

“It’s not results-orientated to start with – we get to look at different people and see who fits well with each other.

“It’s our revision for the start of the league season. It’s always a good game against Hartlepool.”

The Micky Skinner Trophy game at Guisborough follows on Wednesday next week, then the visit of FC United of Manchester, who won Whitby’s league last season, on Saturday July 25.

Williams was keen to invite FC United over as he knows the match could attract a good gate and make Whitby some much-needed revenue.

“A nice day will bring people out in numbers, even more so now they’ve been promoted and they’ll be looking to get their campaign under way and bring attractive players in.”
