Whitby football team’s destiny goes down to last game

WHITBY RFC’s hopes of promotion were stung by a Westover Wasps side littered with first team players, who avenged their 6-1 drubbing earlier in the season.

Rugby Club now go into Saturday’s crunch clash at home to third-placed Riskers knowing they will be promoted to the second division of the Scarborough League if they avoid defeat.

Whitby RFC took the lead on 34 minutes when a cross from the right saw Ben Watson’s initial effort saved, but the ball fell kindly to the RFC hitman who headed home for 1-0 at the break.

The second half saw a long ball evade the RFC defence for Westover to equalise, before Lee Brennan put Whitby RFC back in front with 35 minutes remaining.

Westover hit back to level at 2-2 before two goals in the final eight minutes sealed the Rugby Club’s fate.

The only comfort was that Riskers had failed to take advantage of the favour Westover attempted to do them and were well beaten 5-1 by promoted Whitby Fishermen’s.

Rugby Club were still in second with a +22 better goal difference than Riskers, who go to the Rugby Club on Saturday (30 April) needing to win to secure promotion.

Any other result and both Whitby teams will go up.
