TRIBUTE has been paid to a former Whitby footballer who later became the chairman who led Middlesbrough out of a financial nightmare.
Colin Henderson, who died last week, played for Whitby Arcadians as a junior before going on national service, before returning to Whitby where he played for Fishburn Park, attending many of the club’s dinners.
As chairman, he helped pull ‘Boro out of liquidation as the Teesside club went from oblivion into the Premier League.
Charlie Woodward, ex-Arcadian secretary who met Mr Henderson through a Fishburn Park dinner, said: “He was a smashing bloke - a nice gentleman.
“I used to have a regular natter to him aboout football, he always had time to talk to you.”
His funeral was due to be held at St Hilda’s Church in Whitby.
