FISHERMEN’S won through to a second cup final of an impressive season with an extra time win over Malton team Pro Pak of the Beckett League.
Fishermen’s started strongly and pressed Pro-Pak, creating several good chances within the first 20 minutes but unable to convert any.
Five minutes later, though, they did have the ball in the Pro-Pak net, only for the effort to be disallowed by the assistant official. This seemed to frustrate the Whitby side a little as they were desperate to convert a chance.
They continued to dominate but the first half ended goalless.
The second half started much as the first ended with Fishermen’s having lots of possession and Pro-Pak content to sit back and hit them on the counter-attack. That’s exactly what happened on 60 minutes when their forward latched on to a long ball forward and finished to go 1-0 up .
Fishermen’s had a bit more urgency about their play and were rewarded with a superb Neil Hart goal, when he struck the ball from 20 yards into the top corner for the equaliser.
Although Fishermen’s pressed hard they were unable to clinch the winner before the 90 minutes were up and needed goals from skipper Scaife and Karl Storr in the second half of extra time to finish off the battling Pro-Pak side and win a place in the Scarborough Junior Cup final.
Man of the match: Peter Scaife
Fishermen’s have one further semi-final to play on 9 April in a bid to make it a hat trick of finals.
