Whitby RFC took a huge stride towards promotion from Scarborough League division three with a hard-fought 1-0 win against an impressive FC Filey side on Saturday.
The Whitby side burst out fo the traps and should have led inside the opening two minutes when Taylor rolled the ball into the path of the prolific Watson whose shot was somehow kept out by the Filey keeper.
Frrom the resulting corner, Brennan shot wide as the away side looked for an early goal.
Watson then hit the bar from 25 yards with a screaming effort, before a mixture of poor final ball and poor finishing meant FC Filey were still in the game with 30 minutes gone.
The home side almost took the lead when a free-kick from 20 yards squirmed loose and Fish superbly denied the Filey striker from five yards out with a point-blank save.
The second half saw Filey come into the game as the Whitby side’s frustration grew and on 57 minutes, a long throw was flicked onto the post with Fish a bystander.
Watson, Lee and Mike Brennan then went close before the vital goal arrived on 84 minutes when the Rugby Club broke away and after FC Filey failed to clear, Mike Brennan’s effort was deflected and finally beat the home keeper to win the points.
Fish and the RFC defence once again keeping a clean sheet which was vital in this tight encounter.
A win at Westover Reserves tomorrow and a defeat for Riskers, who travel to Whitby Fishermen’s, would all but see the Rugby Club promoted.
