A STE Ross double helped Mark Jackson’s third division leaders Wanderers break Commercial and book their McCain Cup semi-final place against Newlands Reserves.
Ross opened the scoring early in the first half with a breakaway goal, beating the visitors’ offside trap and sliding the ball elegantly past the keeper.
The hosts then made it 2-0 on the half-hour mark after Jericho Keys was brought down in the penalty area, with the resulting spot-kick majestically stroked into the corner of the net by Lee Brennan.
Commercial fought back and scored on the hour mark with a Jamie Fowler penalty and were then forced to play the final 20 minutes a man light as Brennan was sent off for unsporting behaviour.
The Whitby side managed withstand a sustained spell of pressure and sealed their win in the 85th minute, with Ross bagging his brace from close range after cutting in from the flank and beating his marker.
Jackson singled out goalkeeper Dave Fish as his man of the match for making two or three important saves and coming out bravely to smother the ball at the feet of the Commercial forwards.
