Resolute rivals finally crack

FISHBURN under 14s travelled to bottom of the league Holt expecting to win comfortably, but that wasn’t the case.

Although the first half was all Fishburn, chance after chance went begging.

Tom Shrimpton passed the ball to Sam Pike and his cross found Harry Purves in front of an open goal but his header hit the bar and although it crossed the line, the ref didn’t give it.

Bryn Kirby nearly scored but he rushed the shot unnecessarily. Pike found himself behind the defence but his lob over the on-rushing keeper went just wide. Kirby finally managed to beat the keeper but were offside.

On a rare Holt attack, Charles Brown confidently punched the ball clear. Luke Stokoe also went close with a header after a good cross from Spencer Hewison.

In the second half, Fishburn went behind after a crisp strike left Brown no chance. Harry Lightwing was bringing the ball out nicely but nobody was running into the channels to give him an outlet. Jay Stonehouse played nicely on debut at right back passing the ball at the right time to the wide players.

With 20 minutes to go and so many wasted chances it looked like it wasn’t going to happen until Jack Idle beat the off-side trap, carried the ball 25 yards before hitting a crisp finish across the keeper.

This deflated the home side who had defended resolutely and it looked like there was only going to be one winner.

Hewison hit a post from range and Storr should have scored when a whipped in free-kick found him alone at the far post.

Pike was halted by a rash tackle in the box and Purves calmly side-footed the penalty home.

Chester Adamski played a cracking crossfield pass and Idle was onto it again and he smashed the ball home.

It was all Fishburn with 10 minutes to go, Stokoe was upended 30 yards out and Pike’s free-kick beat the keeper for pace.

The final goal involved Shrimpton and Storr who set Purves away and another emphatic finish left the keeper a spectator. Kirby nearly grabbed a late goal but an excellent save denied him.

Man of the match: Luke Stokoe - won everything in the air and cleverly passed the ball out of defence.
