FYLINGDALES FC breezed past FC Filey in a County Cup match played in gale force winds, to claim their sixth consecutive win in a row and their first in Filey for two years.
FFC, who now have a growing competitive squad, were missing top striker Simon Forde who was replaced by the fit Andrew McGreavy who gave everything to put a claim in for a regular start.
Winger Steve Stones was also missing as he was called up to run a birthday party for FFC’s youngest and energetic fan Violet Breckon who turned four last week.
Officiating was Scarborough referee Albert Eadon but it was the wind that had the most control of the game. FFC won the toss and chose to play with the wind and go for the early advantage.
This turned out to be a masterstroke as FFC keeper did not touch the ball once in the most one-sided half.
First on the scoresheet was new boy Tommy Gray who slotted home after Filey failed to deal with an FFC corner.
Supported by the wind, FFC launched waves of attacks but it was a moment of class and vision when veteran left back Sam Hart let fly from 40 yards with a swerving unstoppable effort that ricoched in off the bar and post.
FFC’s third came from Jamie Agar, whose non-stop energy paid off when he capitalised on a Filey defensive error and fired the ball home.
FFC went into half-time buoyant but wary about the second half as they knew the wind would provide them with a far stiffer challenge.
Luckily for the Robin Hood’s Bay side led last week by assistant coach John Mallette, their short passing game paid off.
On 55 minutes, a fantastic run by Steve Griffith landed at the feet of Gary Tuby who crossed from the right into Jake Faichney who was his usual calm and composed self and knocked it in off his knee.
Playing against the wind FFC still dominated though Filey created a handful of chances that were dealt with well by the keeper Jamie Wassell.
The icing on the cake for the cup victory came on 76 minutes when captain Paddy Chandler scored. A Hart throw headed on by McGreavy was touched past a Filey defender and Chandler fired in Dale’s fifth into the bottom left.
There is no league match this Sunday but there will be a friendly and all wannabe ‘Dales stars are invited for a trial, kick-off 11am.
