HINDERWELL’S England footballer Beth Mead got the new season off to a sensational start when she netted five times in a friendly.
Her Sunderland ladies’ side travelled to the BT Local Business Stadium, Dronfield, to take on Sheffield Ladies on Sunday and won 6-0.
Sunderland took the lead on 30 minutes with a Mead goal after a cross from Keira Ramshaw. Four minutes later, the 17-year-old. who is student at Whitby Communbity College, scored her second, this time from a Kelly McDougall pass.
Vicki Greenwell went close after hitting the bar and just before half-time Mead completed her hat-trick.
Several changes were made in the second half and Mead scored her fourth of the game after Ramshaw’s shot was parried by the goalkeeper and the Hinderwell lass slotted home before making it five, with Jordan Atkinson taking the final score to six.
Manager Mick Mulhern said after the game: “The girls have worked very hard during pre-season and it showed.
“Sheffield are a good side who have played several pre-season games so far, whereas this was only our second.
“We dominated the game and I’m delighted with the tempo we maintained and the quality we showed throughout the 90 minutes.
“It’s another big forward step in our preparation.”
