Whitby’s England ladies footballer Beth Mead scored an injury time winner for her club side Sunderland ladies - and ran straight to her jubilant family to celebrate.

The 20-year-old and her Black Cats team-mates kicked off their second half of their FA Women’s Super League 1 season on Sunday.

They were up against Notts County - a team which has five players who took part in the recent Fifa Women’s World Cup.

Sunderland won the game 2-1 thanks to Mead’s late goal.

She has spoken of her pride at what England achieved in the World Cup in Canada, reaching the semi-finals until Laura Bassett’s freak own goal knocked them out.

“I think the women’s team did their country proud - it was nice to see a national team play with some pride and passion,” said Beth.

“Semi-finals is a massive step and they were so unlucky not to get to the final.

“The World Cup has changed people’s perception of the women’s game and more and more people are becoming interested.”
