ItIs a second half rout for Wanderers
WANDERERS made their second consecutive trip to Oliver’s Mount to face mid-table second division outfit and last season’s division three champions ItIs ItIs in the McCain Cup.
Despite a heavy frost in Whitby on the morning, the playing conditions on the Mount were good, albeit with a heavy playing surface.
The visiting side started the brighter and crafted a couple of good chances before 10 minutes in. Simon Taylor ghosted past the home side’s offside trap to lob the onrushing keeper to give Wanderers an early lead.
This seemed to spring the home side into action as they started to knock the ball around well, utilising both wide areas to good effect.
The pressure told as after some good work down their right, the visitors failed to clear and was lashed home from the edge of the box.
The hosts created further chances and took the lead 25 minutes in after some decent midfield play allowing space for a driven shot from the edge of the box giving stand in keeper Jackson no chance.
Wanderers did battle back and managed to force a number of saves through Taylor, Rhucroft and Wilson, but good work from the keeper kept the score line at 2-1.
Close to half-time, the hosts managed to score a further two goals, firstly from a corner with the ball falling to a free man to finish and secondly a cross-cum-shot managing to drift luckily into the far corner of the goal making the score 4-1.
After the break, the hosts’ quality showed as they continued to pass the ball well throughout their team, creating and scoring a further six, making them runaway winners against the tiring Wanderers who, despite the scoreline, battled hard until the final whistle.
Wanderers’ next game is at home to Turk’s Head on Sunday, kick-off 10.30am, where they will look to dig deep to record their first points of 2012.
