Grant’s goal tops match-winning display

FISHBURN Park under 13s progressed into the second round of the North Riding County Cup against Brompton.

Fishburn started strongly, creating chances with the gusty wind in their favour. It took seven minutes for Callum Halley to score the opener after Jack Kelly made a great run from right back and delivered the perfect pass into Halley’s path.

He took a couple of touches before unleashing a great strike from just inside the area past the keeper.

Fishburn continued to dominate with another great defensive display limiting Brompton’s chances.

At the other end, they continued to search for another goal and it came from a keeper error.

Halley picked up the ball in his own half and made a run before playing the ball forward in search of a striker.

The ball was sent too far and just when it seemed the keeper had it in his hands, the ball got away and rolled into the back of the net.

Brompton had the last attack of the half, scoring a great goal from outside the area just before the whistle.

In the second half, Fishburn had the wind against them but continued to play well. They regained their two-goal cushion when they were awarded a free-kick 30 yards from goal.

Owen Grant timed it well and as the wind dropped, stepped up to score a superb goal.

There was lots more drama to come. Brompton were awarded a penalty 15 minutes from time to make it 3-2 and set up an excellent finish.

Fishburn had a good penalty shout turned down for a deliberate handball in the area while at the other end, the Fishburn defence stood firm under pressure. Brompton almost levelled in the last minute but keeper Purvis made a terrific save.

Man of the match: Owen Grant - a solid midfield performance topped off with an excellent goal.
