Fylingdales lose out as ref ‘misses’ handball

Battling Fylingdales Reserves went down fighting 2-1 in a thrilling Sunday League encounter at Cayton.

The Dales set off with a full team but were forced to drop off Matt Winspear en route to the game as the first team due were short again due to late cry-offs.

His presence was required so veterans Neil Purves and Neil Brearley were forced to don their boots to make up the reserves numbers.

Dales started well and young Sam Newton, playing his first game for his village side, was making some good runs down the right wing.

Both sides were defending well, especially Harry Purves and Lewis Brearley for the Dales and it was 0-0 at half-time.

Dales’ second string went close early on in the second half when Dave Smith hit the bar from a great Ricky Roach cross and Eddie Agnew had a great shot saved.

With 15 minutes to go, Cayton struck twice with two quick goals after beating the offside trap.

Dales pushed centre back Harry Purves up into midfield and were soon to close the gap when his great through ball found young striker Ben Thompson who fired home.

The Dales launched plenty of attacks in the last five minutes and thought they had won a penalty from a clear handball from a corner, only for the ref to over-rule it as he was not ready.

He ordered the corner to be retaken but soon after, the whistle was blown and with it went the Dales’ chance of a draw.

Although disappointed with the loss the young side pushed the home team all the way and with three of the reserves team already moved up to the first team and some of the young village reserve players improving every game, the future looks bright.
