WHITBY Town players and supporters are waiting to find out whether tonight’s (Thurs) game at rain-lashed Matlock Town will go ahead.

The fixture - the penultimate in the Blues’ EvoStik League campaign - was due to be played last night (Wed) but was postponed 24 hours due to a waterlogged pitch.

But with persistent rain sweeping the country, there is a strong chance tonight’s game will be off too.

A decision should be made early this afternoon.

League chiefs have confirmed to the Whitby Gazette if tonight’s game is off, the fixture will be played early next week - not Friday as was first feared. The Blues also travel to in-form Buxton on Saturday.

The league said that according to their rules, all league games should be complete by the final day of the season (on Saturday) but with the “extraordinary” situation with the weather, it would be unfair on Whitby to play on a Friday night and a Saturday afternoon.

In an added twist, Whitby - who are just above the relegation zone - will find out next Wednesday whether they will be deducted one point in a dispute over the status of a player, Ross Gardner, who played less than half a game for the club last autumn.
