FOOTBALL League side Hartlepool United will arrive at the Turnbull in the pick of Whitby Town’s pre-season friendly matches this summer, writes Duncan Atkins.

Fellow north east rivals Darlington will also provide a stern test as the Blues look to begin the next EvoStik League season in fine form.

The Blues will kick off the pre-season campaign with a home clash against the reformed Gretna 2008, the club formed after the bankruptcy and demise of Gretna FC.

Other home games follow against old adversaries Whitley Bay and Eastwood Town, who play in the Blue Square North, the division above Whitby, while Tommy Cassidy’s side make trips to Pickering Town and Tyneside outfit Dunston Federation.

The full list is:

Mon 25 July v Hartlepool Utd (h)

Meanwhile, Blues defender and players’ player of the year Kev Burgess and the versatile Andy Leeson have both signed contracts for next season, while Cassidy has snapped up local hotshot Jake Faichney, who scored more than 50 goals for Fylingdales FC in the Sunday League last season.

Leon Scott has left to join Northern League Shildon.
