WHITBY Town go in search of their first ever victory over FC United of Manchester on Saturday (12 Feb) at Football League stadium, Bury’s Gigg Lane.
The Blues will hope to build on Wednesday’s opening three points of 2011 against fellow strugglers Stocksbridge Park Steels.
The 2-0 success took Town out of the bottom four thanks to strikes from Dave McTiernan and Ash Davis.
FC United made the headlines earlier this season after a shock last-gasp 3-2 win at Football League neighbours Rochdale.
They then took League One leaders Brighton to a replay, as they reached the second round proper of the FA Cup for the first time in their short history.
United regularly get crowds in excess of 2,000 and Whitby manager Tommy Cassidy has called on his team to show their mental strength in a unique atmosphere for semi-professional football.
“Our players have got to stand up to it. It’s a test of everything,” he said.
Cassidy confirmed two young players – Sam Hodgson, who’s just back from a scholarship in the USA and 22-year-old ex-Stranraer defender Alex White – are currently training with the Blues.
Meanwhile, former left-back Mark Robinson is seeking a return to the club.
Cassidy added: “I would like to assure the supporters we are doing a lot behind the scenes, they can’t see that, but we are.
“You don’t need to be a rocket scientist to work out we need a centre forward, but it’s February and no-one’s going to let a good centre forward go at this time of year.”
Vice-captain Jimmy Beadle is hoping to be back after flu ruled him out of Wednesday’s vital win, so Town should be at full strength for the trip.
Despite back to back defeats against champions-elect FC Halifax, United began the year with four straight wins, slamming in 12 goals in the process.
However, just one win in four followed. They emulated Town with a 0-0 draw at Frickley Athletic on Tuesday night.
Kick-off is the usual 3pm and admission is £8 adults, £5 over 60s and £2 under 18s.
A supporters’ bus leaves the Turnbull Ground at 9.30am. There is a dominoes drive in the club house on Friday (11 Feb) at 8pm.
