Whitby Town’s opening pre-season encounter ended in a 1-0 home defeat to South Shields.

The Northern League Division One outfit triumphed at the Turnbull Ground courtesy of a 35th-minute own goal by Steven Snaith, who glanced a Julio Arca corner into his own net.

Blues boss Chris Hardy was however not overly concerned by the result of the game.

“The outcome obviously isn’t what we hoped for, but the real aim of this game was just to make sure that all 22 of our players got 45 minutes of football under their belts,” he said.

“It was out first game of pre-season and it was very noticeable that South Shields had already played three or four matches this summer. They looked a bit further down the line in terms of their preparations.

“That said, there were some decent performances from our players and I thought that the three lads who’ve only just arrived from Guisborough [Snaith, Danny McWilliams and Curtis Round] settled in nicely.

“Come Wednesday’s game against Middlesbrough, we will adopt a slightly different approach and see what happens there.”
