HINDERWELL’S Beth Mead shook off her England disappointment by sending Sunderland ladies to the top of the league on Sunday.

The 16-year-old striker’s header was the only goal of the game as the Black Cats beat Leeds 1-0.

It was enough to put them of the summit of the Women’s National Premier League, leapfrogging their opponents in the process.

Natalie Gutteridge played the ball through for Beth who closed in on goal and when the Leeds keeper collided with her own defender and the ball broke loose for Beth to slot home her eighth goal of the season.

Last week, the Whitby Community College student was called up for England under 17s for the first qualifying round of the UEFA European Championship but later withdrew with a hamstring injury.
