HINDERWELL footballer Beth Mead has been named in England’s under 17 squad for the first qualifying round of the UEFA Championships, to be held later this month in Northern Ireland.

The 16-year-old, who plays as striker for Sunderland ladies, will meet up with the rest of the team when England take on Israel on Tuesday (11 Oct), before facing hosts Northern Ireland on Thursday (13 Oct) and Finland on Sunday 16 October.

It is a fantastic reward for Whitby Community College student Beth, who has been in dazzling form for the Black Cats since joining them over the summer.

She was on the scoresheet once again on Sunday, helping Sunderland to a 6-3 win over Reading.

Her side led 2-0 before the Royals pulled a goal back before the break, but then Beth restored Sunderland’s two-goal cushion ten minutes after the break and there was no looking back from there.

It was Beth’s seventh goal in six games.
