WHITBY Community College student Beth Mead has been named in England Women’s under 17 squad for the forthcoming UEFA U17 Championship second qualifying round in Belgium.

The 16-year-old from Hinderwell - who has scored 23 goals for Sunderland ladies this season - will be part of the squad meet up on Monday 9 April, when England take on Iceland on Friday 13 April, Belgium on Sunday 15 April and finally Switzerland on Wednesday 18 April.

The group winners will progress to the finals.

“It’s great that Beth has received an England call-up,” said Sunderland manager Mick Mulhern.

“She has forced her way back into the international set-up over recent months and that’s down to her hard work at Sunderland.

“It’s well deserved. Hopefully Beth will be playing for England for years to come.

“Everyone at the club wishes Beth the best of luck in the qualifiers.”
