First shield win for 20 years

GOATHLAND Hunt Pony Club hosted the annual Staintondale Shield at Sleights Village Hall.

Six teams entered and were asked a variety of questions including general knowledge, points of the horse and tack etc.

Teams entered were Friars Hill, Staintondale, Middleton East, Sinnington and two teams from Goathland.

Each team had four members.

Points were very close at half-time.

Final marking revealed a draw between Goathland 2 and Sinnington, both with 103 1/2.

The tie-breaker question was: Name as many racecourses in Yorkshire as you can.

Quizmaster Eric Matthew gave the teams two minutes to write down as many as they could.

Parents and supporters held their breath as the answers were marked. Goathland 2 won 7-4.

This was the first time Goathland have won the shield in 20 years.

Team trainer Clare Cornforth was thrilled with the result.

The winning team was – Louise Cornforth, Bethany Clarkson, Tilly Smith and Iris Conn.

Goathland Hunt Pony Club welcomes new members and its summer series at Kettleness is already under way.
