England went into this morning’s second Test 11/8 to retain the Ashes and let’s hope the news is better from Adelaide although the last time the Aussies led in an Ashes series they went on to win 5-0.

At the time of writing a 5-0 whitewash for the Baggy Greens was priced at 20/1.

It seems inconceivable but the favourite for the vacant Sheffield Wednesday manager’s position is currently former Blades’ boss Neil Warnock (4/5 at BetVictor) who is alleged to have once said one or two rude things about the Owls to put it mildly. Few things shock or surprise me about football but if Warnock is next through the door at Hillsborough I would be staggered.

Cristiano Ronaldo is 8/13 for Le Ballon D’or (FIFA World Player of the Year) after a flood of money came for Lionel Messi (6/1 into 6/5) on Wednesday; the Barcelona striker is out till the New Year with a hamstring injury but some have suggested he has already done enough although this is surely Ronaldo’s year to wrestle the crown of the world’s best player.

Whitby Town are 500/1 for the Northern Premier League and are 19/10 at Betvictor for their visit to Ilkeston Town at the weekend with the North Derbyshire side 6/5 favourites and the draw at 5/2.

Chorley are the odds on 4/5 favourites for the Title with Fylde 8s and Skelmersdale United 5/1.

We laid a bet of 20k on Derby County at 5/4 for a top six finish ahead of last night’s home game with Boro and you would have to say the appointment of Steve McClaren looks inspired albeit at this early stage of his stewardship at Pride Park.

Sam Allardyce is 4/1 from 10s to be the next Premier League manager to leave/lost his post after West Ham’s 1-0 loss to Crystal Place on Tuesday evening; AVB remains 3/1 favourite and that price would shorten if Spurs don’t take care of Fulham at Craven Cottage midweek.

There are some fascinating second round FA Cup ties this weekend with Conference table-toppers Cambridge United meeting Sheffield United in front of the BT cameras on Sunday ahead of the eagerly awaited third round draw on Sunday.

We favour last season’s beaten finalists Manchester City to go one better and make them our 5/1 favourites with Chelsea and Man U 6s, Arsenal 8s and 9/1 Bar. Roberto Martinez knows what it’s like to lift the trophy and Everton at 16/1 is the antepost shout.

Big weekend of Celebrity TV with the final of I’m A Celebrity; Joey Essex is 8/15 to be named King Of The Jungle with Kian Egan 2s. Sam Bailey is almost unbackable at 1/3 to win the X Factor but Strictly Come Dancing is a much more open contest with Natalie Gumede 2/1 favourite from Sophie Ellis-Bextor 11/4, Susanna Reid 11/4 and Abbey Clancy at 7s. The final of Strictly is not until December 21 and it really couldn’t be any closer.

We are still hoping that Sprinter Sacre scopes clean on Thursday morning to take his place in the field for the BetVictor Tingle Creek Chase at Sandown on Saturday; while the race would be more competitive if he failed his planned scope on Thursday morning the race would be substandard if the greatest two-mile chaser in living memory misses the race this morning.
