Muston 2nds ended Cayton 3rds’ unbeaten start to the Derwent Valley League season with a 45-run home win to boost their own division B title push.

The hosts racked up an impressive 189-6 from their 40 overs thanks to fine batting from Darren Newland, 49no, and Kyle Orange, 46, while James McMillan added 37 and Laurence Webb 26 as the Cayton bowling attack toiled.

Daz Jones, 35, William Wood, 32, and Shakil Iqbal, 26, all tried their best to maintain the leaders’ unbeaten start to the season, but canny bowling Scott Orange, 4-46, ensured that Muston pipped Cayton.

Cayton remain top despite this defeat, but second-placed Valley Bar Nomads are only three points behind with a game in hand, while third-placed Muston also have a match in hand and are only 10 points adrift of the pacesetters.

Valley Bar Nomads maintained their push for honours thanks to another fine display from their bowling attack, edging to a five-wicket win at promotion rivals Thornton Dale 2nds.

The title-chasers lost five wickets on their way to chasing down Dale’s meagre 80 all out, condemning the villagers to their first defeat of the season, and were thankful for the bowling exploits of veterans Jim Hunter, 5-15, and Dave Parkinson, 4-13.

Nathan Mills, 30, and Paul Elgey, 27, were the only batsmen to shine, as Nomads’ batsmen also struggled to find form as they scraped home.

Ravenscar 2nds all-rounder John nelson shone with bat and ball in his team’s opening win of the season, a 36-run win at home to Scalby 3rds.

Nelson took 3-11 and teenager Luke Stokoe 3-34 as Scalby were skittled for 89 in pursuit of the hosts’ 125-5, Phil Perry the top Scalby batsman with 28.

All-round hero Nelson had earlier held the home innings together with an unbeaten 47.

Youngster Adam Eustace took a hat-trick as Wykeham 3rds earned a 73-run home win against landlords Snainton.

The teenager took the final three wickets in a match-winning spell of 5-14 as Snainton slipped to 123 all out in spite of strong batting from Carl Wilson, 36, and Michael Kipling, 43.

Graham Shannon had earlier smashed 66 and George Shannon in Wykeham’s 196-8, Robin Shepherdson remaining unbeaten on 32 as the hosts fell four runs short of full batting points.

The only close game in division A saw Filey 2nds keep their cool to earn a 12-run home win against Lockton.

Lewis Adams smacked 40 and Dave Brannan 25 as the hosts were dismissed for 125, and then Adams took 3-23 as the village side were all out for 115 in reply, Ellery Liley snapping up 3-13 for the Clarence Drive club.

Kirkbymoorside continue to dominate as the runaway leaders were handed 20 points as visitors Hospitals/Rugby Club conceded the game, the second time the struggling club have done so this season.

Second-placed Flixton 3rds also look firm favourites to earn the second promotion slot after strolling to a seven-wicket win at home to Sherburn 2nds thanks to a magnificent seven-wicket haul by Pete Hill.

The veteran scooped 7-21 as the visitors stumbled to 71 all out, and Cameron Anderson’s unbeaten 32 tied up the win for Flixton.

Chris Hodgson snapped up 4-10 as crisis club Sewerby 3rds slumped to 30 all out at home to Wold Newton 2nds.

The clifftop side have struggled for numbers this season and have only gained six points from their six league games, and Wold Newton lost only one wicket in knocking off the required runs on Saturday.

Another mismatch saw Nawton Grange 2nds bowler George Bentley turn on the style with a outstanding eight-wicket haul as his side crushed Forge Valley 3rds by 174 runs.

Former Kirkbymoorside star Neil Ward showed his experience in the higher echelons of the Beckett League with a forceful 71, while Nathan Marwood fell just three runs short of his half-century, Terry Ellis scoring 43 and James Dunn 25 as Grange racked up a strong 230-5 from their 40 overs at Garth End Road.

Bentley then hit top gear as he snapped up a clutch of wickets, 8-21, as the away team accelerated to victory.
