Danby soar to big win

DANBY'S home fixture was played on Whitby's Astroturf last weekend, following a 6-1 victory over York Olympics on the surface a fortnight ago.

Danby took advantage of the familiarity of their practice venue and looked comfortable from the start, with some confident, flowing play leading to an early first goal, as Beth Havelock was perfectly positioned to deflect in a powerful cross.

Stillington found their feet as the first half progressed and defended hard, clearing shots off the goal-line more than once but were still unable to prevent an on-form Havelock from completing her hat-trick by half-time.

Excellent midfield play by Rosie Welford, Kath Hoggarth and Karen Dowson controlled the flow of the game, as the ball was frequently switched to utilise the full width of the pitch.

Stillington continued to defend determinedly and broke to create occasional attacking chances but were unable to penetrate a solid Danby defence, who remained focused and returned the ball to the attacking half quickly and efficiently.

Debbie Callaghan added to the scoreline midway through the second half with a precisely placed raised shot from an acute angle, as Danby continued to dominate play.

The scoring was completed as Nikki Graham pushed up from defence to hit a powerful strike from the top of the circle.

This was a brilliant all-round team performance.

Player of the match: Beth Havelock.
