Danby and Stakesby heading for area finals after retaining titles
TWELVE local primary schools took part in an indoor athletics event over two days at the Whitby Leisure Centre.
Six smaller schools competed – Ruswarp, Danby, Goathland, Lealholm, Fylingdales and Castleton while later in the week, six larger schools attended – West Cliff, Sleights, East Whitby, Airy Hill, Stakesby and a guest appearance from Egton who couldn't attend the previous week.
Field events included vertical jump, triple jump, long jump, target throw, speed bounce, chest push and foam javelin.
Track events included one lap sprint, four-lap distance, one plus one relay, six-lap Paarlauf relay and 4 x 1 lap relay.
At the end all of the children enjoyed an obstacle relay set up by young leaders from Whitby Community College.
Both competitions were incredibly competitive.
Lealholm were third with 185 points, Ruswarp second with 193 and Danby first with 202 points, retaining their title from last year.
The two schools who won the larger schools event were due to go through to the Ryedale and Whitby Partnership Final at Norton College.
This event was close with only nine points separating fourth and first.
In third place was West Cliff with 188 points, second was East Whitby with 194 and one point ahead with 195 points were Stakesby, again retaining their title from 2009.
Pete Woolley, school sports co-ordinator, said: "Young leaders from Whitby Community College did a brilliant job on both days.
"They set up the hall in the leisure centre and made sure the events ran smoothly – timing, officiating and scoring each event.
"The young competitors tried there very best throughout both afternoons gaining an important insight into competitive athletics."
