Cup quarter-final looms

WHITBY Town travel to Derbyshire for their long-awaited Unibond League Cup quarter-final tie with fellow promotion-chasers Matlock Town tomorrow.

Whitby and Matlock are sixth and seventh respectively in the league, but there are no points at stake at the Geoquip Stadium this weekend.

This tie came out of the hat as long ago as January, but Matlock saw their second round tie with neighbours Gresley Rovers postponed six times and abandoned once due to waterlogging of their pitch in the valleys of the Peak District.

The tie finally had to be moved to Belper Town’s Christchurch Meadow – and it proved eighth time lucky when the Gladiators secured a 4-1 win.

Another first division side, Kidsgrove Athletic, were defeated 3-1 in the third round.

Lee Nogan’s men will be seeking revenge for defeat in the final of this competition two seasons ago.

The match tomorrow will go to extra-time and penalties if the scores are level.

If victorious, Whitby will host First Division Woodley Sports on Wednesday 22 March in the semi-finals.

Blues defender Aron Wilford has left the club after requesting to go, it has been revealed.

Nogan said: “If he doesn’t want to be with us there’s no point in playing.

“It’s his decision not mine so we’ll let him get on with it.”

Centre half Danny Farthing misses out with a re-occurrence of a knee injury but Wayne Clarke (18) has joined the Blues on a month’s loan from Darlington to act as cover.

Steve Thomas may be out for three weeks with a suspected broken toe while keeper Dave Campbell is a doubt with a stomach injury.

The good news is skipper Matty Appleby has recovered from ‘flu and will be back in the squad tomorrow.
