Cricketers celebrate £16,000 grant

MULGRAVE Cricket Club have been awarded a £16,688 grant.

The cash, from the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) in partnership with Sport England, will allow the Lythe-based club to develop a synthetic practice area to boost their coaching facilities.

Previously the ECB had donated 52,760 towards the cost of the upgrade of the club's cricket square and ground drainage.

Committee member Chris Raine said: "We were extremely pleased when we heard we had been awarded a grant because we urgently needed some quality practice facilities.

"The new two bay synthetic practice pitches are excellent and we have now been able to introduce a much more structured coaching programme which is beneficial for both senior and junior practice sessions for the players.

"We have over 40 juniors and the good safe pitches are ideal for the coaching and development of young cricketers."

"During the past few years, the club has made considerable progress both on and off the field and we have achieved ECB Clubmark and Focus Club status.

"We also provide coaching and cricket opportunities for the local schools and the Ryedale Sports Group and we are pleased that ECB has recognised the work we do at junior level."

"We are very grateful to the ECB and Sport England for their most generous grants and support as we could not afford these high quality practice facilities from our own resources.

"We regard the grants as an investment in cricket at the club for the future."

The investment supports Sport England's and the ECB's national strategy 2009-2013 which aims to grow the number of people playing sport, sustain participation by encouraging more people to keep playing sport and help talented sports people excel.

Mulgrave CC was identified by Yorkshire Cricket Board and the ECB as a club of strategic and developmental importance due to their ability to contribute to the ECB's goals to develop cricket through energising people and partnerships to deliver national goals at a local level and to inspire people to play cricket.

Sport England's director of property, Charles Johnson, said: "The improved practice and coaching facilities at Mulgrave Cricket Club will be welcomed both by experienced players looking to improve their game and by people who are new to cricket. We are confident the ECB's strategic approach to investing in high-quality, sustainable facilities will help cricket to attract and retain many new participants and create more opportunities to develop sporting talent."

Bruce Cruse, the ECB's national funding and facilities manager said: "The ECB is pleased to invest in this worthy project and to give a boost to grass roots facility development."
