Cricket fun day at Lythe

YORKSHIRE County Cricket Club held a two-day cricket course, Enjoy Cricket Fun Day, at the Mulgrave community sports facility in Lythe.

The event was run by local coach Leigh Coates and was a great success.

It was aimed at players of all abilities from the ages of seven to 12-year-olds.

"It was a great two days and the weather stayed fine for us," said Mr Coates.

"The children showed some great enthusiasm and some had wonderful raw talent.

"One of which has been nominated to go through the Yorkshire CCC pathways scheme."

Leigh, who is an England Wales Cricket Board (ECB) level two coach, brought in three more coaches to help – Mic Bates who also is a qualified coach and local lads Craig Thompson and Joel Weightman.

"All the children were great to work with and hopefully they will all go on to play for their local clubs.

"That's what it's all about, getting the young people into cricket so the Whitby area has a future in local cricket."

The children were put into age groups and were set off doing different cricket drills throughout both days.

These included batting, bowling and fielding training along with some speed, agility and balance drills.

The children also got to use the brand new net facilities at Mulgrave.

"It was great to see the kids in the nets because for the cricketers among them, they got to show off their abilities.

"And for the little ones, well most of them have never even put pads and helmets on, so they were just happy to do that.

"In the afternoons, the kids competed in a mini World Cup which went down to the wire. I'd just like to say thanks to TVees Taxis, Around 2 it and Charlie Woodward for donating prizes which included trophies, bats, balls, and tickets to go and watch Yorkshire CCC."

"I hope the children enjoyed it and take some cricket skills away to build on them for next year."
