WHITBY Cricket Club skipper Paul Harrison has stood down from the role after a number of years as skipper, with Paul Buck taking over the role and Steve Allen being made vice-captain.

The second team will also see new captaincy with Ricky Hall stepping down to pursue a first team place, paving the way for Andrew Wood tp be voted in as the new captain at the recent AGM, to be ably assisted by Steve Crowther.

Duncan Lawrence and Mike Fawcett are to continue leading the thirds.

Harrison was thanked for the “massive contribution” he had made while skipper and a club spokesman said: “Everybody looks forward to watching him score heavily with the bat next season.”

Chairman John Hall thanked the membership and committee in particular on their continuing hard work and commitment as the club goes from strength to strength, with membership numbers growing and continued success on the field of play.

He did, however, warn against complacency, particular where fund-raising was concerned, with costs ever increasing but thanked this year’s sponsors for their support, both for now and in the future.

On the field, Whitby’s 1st XI consolidated nicely, finishing in a mid-table position in the North Yorkshire and South Durham League division one after gaining promotion the previous season, while the seconds were unfortunate again to just miss out on promotion to the second tier, finishing fourth in their league.

Whitby thirds team won the Derwent Valley division two title to gain promotion for the second year running, beating close rivals Fylingdales to the top position.

The U17s, U15s and U14s all contributed within their leagues, the U15s in particular just missing out but the enthusiasm, commitment and hard work put in by the juniors was noted by all the senior members and bodes well for the future.

The club committee is now working closely with the trustees of the Turnbull Ground on further improvements to the club house, storage facilities for the playing equipment and grounds machinery.

Everyone thanked groundsman Duncan Steele for the long hours and hard work he has put into preparing the wickets, having recently re-laid a number of pitches, the improved quality which it is hoped will show through for the new season.
