Hall and Harrison set up opening day Whitby win
Whitby skipper Paul Buck won the toss and despite the much-improved wicket at the Turnbull and a fast outfield, he had no hesitation in asking the visitors to bat first, reports Kai Morris.
Whitby got off to a great start with both opening bowlers, Tom Steyert and Chris Lyth, keeping things very tight – as well as beating the bat on numerous occasions.
The first wicket fell as Darlington opener Morgan was bowled through the gate for just six. Whitby then went through a period where they considerable pressured the experienced pair of Barker and Stainsby, which was eventually ended when Barker was caught in the gully by James Hall off the bowling of Lyth.
The latter picked up his second soon after when he bowled Stainsby for 19.
Whitby continued to field exceptionally well and picked up wickets regularly throughout the innings until brief resistance with the only partnership of any note coming between the seventh wicket pair, Peacock and Sturgeon, who made 28 and 36 respectively.
The only other contribution came from Callum Lethbridge, batting at number four, who made a solid 27.
Darlington were eventually bowled out for just 136 with Hall picking up a much-deserved five-wicket hall.
Whitby then began their run chase in very positive fashion, with Paul Harrison treating the visitors’ bowling with particular distain. By this point the sun had come out and the opening pair were making batting look significantly easier than their opponents had done earlier in the day.
Harrison dominated the opening stand that was eventually broken when Donald was bowled for an assured 20.
This meant it was left to Fawcett and Harrison, who made a 89 not out, to complete Whitby’s outstanding nine-wicket victory.
