COMMENT ON THIS STORY: Cammell get the hump at Blues survival
THE wait is over – Whitby Town Football Club will definitely play UniBond League top flight football next season.
Following an agonising six-week wait, the Blues finally had their premier division status confirmed after Cammell Laird's appeal against demotion to the FA was thrown out.
The Blues – who were staring down the barrel of relegation – were thrown an unlikely lifeline on the penultimate weekend of the season as the league relegated Cammell Laird because their ground was not up to scratch.
It meant only three teams were being relegated to league one north rather than the usual four.
Consecutive home wins over Witton Albion and promoted Ilkeston Town followed which secured the Blues' status – subject to Lairds' appeal being dismissed.
The good news was revealed to the Whitby Gazette on Friday morning.
Chairman Graham Manser said everyone at the club was very relieved.
"At the end of the day, while we feel sorry for the supporters of Cammell Laird, rules are rules. We have spent approximately 500,000 on the Turnbull in the past 10 years and therefore every club should have the same criteria applied."
