Club engineers a visit from Indian cricketer

AN Indian cricketing legend is to appear at Fylingdales Cricket Club's buffet and prize-giving ceremony tonight.

Farokh Engineer (71), who played 46 Tests for his country, will be presenting the prizes and speaking at tonight’s event, which is on at the Victoria Hotel in Robin Hood’s Bay from 7.30pm.

Engineer’s international career started in 1961 and continued to 1975 and he was India’s first-choice wicket-keeper for most of that period as well as being a world-class batsman.

He starred for the Rest of the World XI in England and Australia in the early 1970s and played first-class cricket for Mumbai in India and Lancashire in England.

He once landed 94 in one session before lunch, batting against legends like Hall, Griffiths, Sobers and Gibbs.

Engineer is currently a match referee in the IPL.

Also presenting awards on the night is club president Richard Gibson.
