Bannister adds 'huge' experience to basketball camp

WHITBY Wizards Basketball club is celebrating its first year anniversary with a two-day basketball camp this weekend.

And a ‘huge’ amount of experience will be added to the event – the club has been fortunate to bring in ex- England international and ex-NBA player Alan Bannister, who that stands at a towering 7ft 4’.

He has played all around the world, including for the American NBA team the Utah Jazz where he played against the likes of Michael Jordan and Patrick Ewing.

He has also played for the top British teams the Newcastle Eagles, Manchester Giants and the Chester Jets along with a host of other teams across Europe.

Now retired from playing basketball, Bannister has been heavily involved with coaching basketball in Wales and has developed many youngsters into Welsh internationals, some of whom have been able to find high schools and colleges in the USA to further develop their skills and experience.

Whitby Wizards coach Sion Parry, who is leading the 60-strong camp, said: “His career is even more impressive than he is tall – he has played for a top class team throughout his career and will bring something really special to this camp.”

Bannister will also bring three U16 Welsh international basketball players to attend the camp.

“This is a priceless opportunity for our Whitby players to compete against these boys and see how much hard work and dedication is needed to compete at that level,” added Sion.

Sion, a former British Basketball League player for the Chester Jets, will be joined by Martin Roberts, the Ryedale and Whitby Community Basketball coach and Laura Duffield, an impressive Women Basketball National League player for Leeds Carnegie who was also born in and grew up in Whitby.

The camp takes place tomorrow and Sunday at Whitby Leisure Centre from 10am-5pm.

The camp is open to boys and girls aged eight to 16 and will have a variety of competitions and games throughout the two days.

The camp will be divided into ability and age groups and will concentrate on developing all players’ skills.

Prizes will be awarded to most valuable and most improved player of the camp.

l MORE than 60 youngsters are already on the course but if you are still interested, call Sion at Eskdale School on (01947) 602856 or email sscosparry@yahoo.co.uk
