WHITBY Crown Green Bowling Club held its Doubles Merit, the open competition, which attracted 48 bowlers from across the district.
The competitors had entered the competition as a nominated doubles pair and were then drawn into six groups, with each pair playing the other three pairs within their group, all games were off six and were 21 up.

At the end of the first round the total score from the three games (max 63) gave the competitors their final position within their group.

The winner of each group and the two highest runners-up across the six groups went through to the quarter-finals, as follows: Group A S Dover & K Wale (Whitby) 63 pts, Group B I Hadden & J Hadden 56 pts, Group C G Watson (Whitby) & P Richards (Dukes Park) 63 pts, Group D A Landers (Whitby) & T Coyne (North Cliff) 63 pts, Group E: A Deighton and C Bielby (Dukes Park) 63 pts, Group F: K Gates (Whitby) and R Child (North Cliff) 63 pts.

The two highest runners-up were R Thompson and J Cooper (North Cliff) 58 pts and A Bland and R Bland (Borough) 58 pts.

There was a Whitby bowler in each of the quarter-final games and all the Whitby bowlers progressed through to the semi-finals as follows: S Dover and K Wale 2 VI Hadden and J Hadden 8, G Watson and P Richards 21 VA Bland and R Bland 11, A Landers and T Coyne 21 VA Deighton and C Bielby 13, K Gates and R Child 21 VR Thompson and J Cooper 15.

The first semi saw Watson and Richards winning with ease 21-10 over Dover and Wale, while the other semi-final saw a neck and neck tussle finally going to Gates and Child 21-20 against Landers and Coyne.

In the final, it was Watson and Richards who romped into an early lead, 16-7 up. Gates and Child bravely fought back to 16-12 but the lead was too great and Watson and Richards won 21-14, landing them the prize money.

Whitby Bowling Club president Winifred Courts presented the prizes, while event organiser Geoff Watson praised the ladies for providing the refreshments and thanked anyone who helped on the day, with special thanks going to the sponsor for the event, himself.

The next Whitby merit will be the over 60s singles merit to be held next Friday.
