THE new UniBond League season begins tomorrow (Sat) when Whitby Town entertain Buxton on the opening day for the second year running.
Joint boss Phil Brumwell has vowed to turn the Turnbull into a fortress as his side bids for a first-ever promotion to the Blue Square North.
Brumwell told the Gazette this week: "You go into the season hoping to reach the play-offs and we've fallen short of that over the past couple of years but it's something we can realistically achieve.
"We need to keep people fit – we're always on the lookout for new players and we're looking to improve, we will not settle with the squad we've got.
"We need a good home record and we need to get back to being a fortress at home. People shouldn't like coming to Whitby."
Brumwell said it was imperative to add quality to the squad as the UniBond League now allows five subs.
New additions made over the summer include experienced former Leeds United and Hartlepool midfielder Mark Tinkler.
But Town face one or two injury concerns for tomorrow's opener.
Full backs Craig Bishop, another summer signing and Alex Janes are doubtful while Lee Nogan is struggling with a knock and striker Tony Hackworth is suspended.
Centre-back Danny Farthing is not far away from a welcome return but was awaiting news of a scan on his knee.
"We're hoping it's not bad news as we really need Danny back fully fit," said Brumwell.
"His fitness is fine and he thinks he can play but we need to check out his knee.
"But everyone is raring to go, we're confident and we hope to get out of the blocks flying."
Tomorrow's opponents Buxton have brought in just three new signings after reaching the play-off final last term.
Former Barrow strike duo Mark Hume and Gavin Knight are joined by 35-year-old ex-Scarborough and Witton Albion striker Steve Brodie.
Manager John Reed has lost the services of midfielder Anton Foster, who moved to promotion-hopefuls Eastwood Town this summer, with a further blow being the likely absence of captain Terry Bowker due to a rib injury.
Almost a year to the day, Whitby and Buxton fought out a 1-1 draw in front of 357 at the Turnbull when Tom Adams' opener for the Seasiders was cancelled out by Mark Reed's header with 14 minutes left.
Kick-off at the Turnbull Ground is the usual 3pm with admission £7.50 adults, £4.50 OAPs and just £2 under 18s.

l WHITBY travel to Frickley Athletic on Tuesday night.

A supporters' bus leaves the club house at 4pm.
