Whitby moved into third position in the North Yorkshire South Durham Division 2 following a crushing victory at lowly Sedgefield 2nd's on Saturday.
After winning the toss for the first time in living memory, Whitby skipper Paul Harrison had no hesitation in asking the home side to bat first on a damp wicket with cloudy overhead conditions.

From the outset the ball swung and seamed extravagant
ly with Steve Allen virtually unplayable at times.

Aided by some safe catching and good ground fielding the procession of Sedgefield batsmen continued throughout the innings, with only Hartshorn and Young registering double figure scores.

The home side were dismissed for a meagre 53 runs in only 23 overs.

Although all Whitby’s bowlers bowled well the stand out performer was the in-form Steve Allen who returned the magnificent figures of 11-4-18-6, in a display of high quality swing bowling.

Chasing such a paltry total Whitby decided to give some much needed batting practice to their middle/lower order, promoting Josh Suckling and James Hall to open the innings.

Unfortunately, this back-fired with both Suckling and number three Chris Grace being bowled by the pacy Thompson in the first over of the visitors’ reply.

Another youngster, Callum Gibson joined Hall at the crease and the pair survived some difficult moments with Gibson facing a barrage of short pitched deliveries from the fired-up Thompson.

Gradually the pair became more confident and with some clever shot placement and running between the wickets they drew the sting from the home attack and batting became much easier.

With James Hall scoring 28 and Callum Gibson 18, Whitby knocked off the remaining runs in only 14 overs to seal a comprehensive victory for the away team.
