THE 24th annual Octoberfest cross country races organised by the Rotary Club of Whitby and District saw a grand turnout of both runners and spectators on the Caedmon School fields.
Noted as one of the highlights of the community calendar, the event saw some excellent performances from young local athletes.
Airy Hill School scooped the Rotary Challenge Cup for the school turning out the most runners, but only by one point from East Whitby, with Ruswarp School in third spot a mere one point ahead of Stakesby School.
In the team awards, Airy Hill took all four challenge shields, winning the year five boys and girls and the year six boys and girls.
On the individual front, Ruswarp's Charlie Ingram romped home an easy winner from Davy-Joe Taylor of East Whitby with Rory Brickley, Ruswarp, third in the year three boys.
In the girls' year three event, Jasmine Kent of Airy Hill was well clear of team-mate Matilda Carnall with Charley Dyson, East Whitby, third.
The year four boys race saw a sterling battle between Rory Hansell of Ruswarp and East Whitby's Dylan Swales with Christopher Robinson of Airy Hill third.
The sprinting ability of Hope Stewart of Airy Hill proved the decisive factor over Ellis Price of Ruswarp with Naomi Garbutt of East Whitby third in the girls' run.
The year five boys' race was dominated by Jamie Entwistle of East Whitby who was well clear of Airy Hill's William Stewart-Cross with Sam Pearson of St Hilda's a distant third.
Lythe schoolgirl Alice Hogarth had to work hard to shake off Sleights' Maddalena Mastrolonardo in the firls race with Natasha Kent of Airy Hill third.
The outstanding runner of the whole event was Callum Halley of East Whitby who devastated the opposition to win the year six boys' race in commanding style.
Runner-up was Luke Horbury of Airy Hill with Ross Archer of Lythe third.
Beth Entwistle of East Whitby performed a similar feat to Callum's in the sixth year girls' event.
Dominating the run from the start she shook off the opposition of Stakesby's Jade Trueman with Bryonny Hansell a distant third.
In the open 1200 Challenge event for runners aged 12 and above, Eskdale student Sam Fussey romped home clear winner leading from start to finish in a time of 4.26.
Reece Oakley recorded 4.57, just holding off Cameron Price 4.58.
James O'Brien cruised around the undulating course in 5.05 and Sheona Swales of Caedmon recorded 6.20 as first lady.
Event organiser Harry Collett thanked Town Mayor Terry Dennison for presenting the medals, members of the St John Ambulance, members of the Inner Wheel Club of Whitby, fellow Rotarians and Caedmon School representatives for the event.
