WHITBY under 14s reach the final of the North East Festival at Hartlepool despite only having a 16-man squad.
Whitby's first game of the tournament was against Yarm, who were probably the weakest team in the competition and Whitby went on the attack from the start.
Josh Shutt won some good line-out balls and Mitch Eglon ran the ball well from the scrum and
with the forwards winning the ball, the backs ran in some excellent tries.
One of the unusual rules of this tournament was that the try scorer had to convert hs own try, so this relieved kicker Sam Webster of his usual duty and allowed him to concentrate on his passing game.
Alex Beaumont, Dom Hill and Matt Dudman, who scored twice, all managed to convert their tries.
Final score: Whitby 24 Yarm 0. Man of the match: Matt Dudman.
The second game was against Middlesbrough who Whitby played off the pitch.
The forwards dominated the scrum. James Newton did some good work in the ruck and flankers Jack Reeves and Alex Taylor and Steven Cuthbert, playing out of position at number eight, controlled the scrum.
This allowed Matt Dudman, at scrum half, time to pick his passes.
Joe Lenton, Dom Hill and Matt Dudman all scored and converted their tries. Final score: Whitby 21 Middlesbrough 0. Man of the match: Dom Hill.
The final group game saw Whitby play Hordon, one of the pre-tournament favourites.
They had fought and bullied their way through their two previous games, but Whitby refused to back down. Their spirit was defined by the outstanding tackling of Ryan Skidmore which helped the team keep a third clean sheet.
The backs again played well with Nick Craben passing the ball confidently and Tom Opper made an exciting 40-yard run, only denied by a last minute tackle.
In the end Whitby won easily with two tries from Matt Dudman and one by Jack Reeves.
Final score: Whitby 15 Hordon 0. Man of the match: Alex Taylor.
Whitby went through to the final playing Acklam who have only been beaten once this season.
It proved to be an entertaining and exciting match, but Whitby only had a small squad and injuries were taking their toll.
Connor Clennan bravely played in this match despite going off injured earlier in the tournament.
Both teams put in some hard but fair tackles with Bruce Reed tackling well for Whitby.
But despite a great team effort with everyone showing plenty of effort and determination and a try and conversion by full back Joe Lenton, this was one step too far for Whitby and Acklam won in the end.
Final score: Whitby 7 Acklam 15. man of the match: Joe Lenton.
Man of the tournament was Alex Beaumont for his quality tackling and distribution of the ball.
This was quite an extraordinary performance by the whole Whitby squad.
