WITH a fresh south easterly breeze the fleet got away to a rather confused start on Bank Holiday Sunday.
Beeste took full advantage to take an early lead followed by Samaki and Ace. The Spinnaker leg to Sandsend saw some interesting tactics with Beeste sailing the best line to the mark, Samaki tried an inverted launch and a broach but still managed to k
eep pace with the leaders.
Esk Argo had taken her usual zigzag route and lost out by losing the wind close inshore. She eventually dragged herself back on track to converge at the mark at the same time as Beeste but at twice the speed.
A deft manoeuvre ensued with Esk Argo going around the outside to jibe in front of Beeste but lost control.
Beeste took advantage of the situation to head off on the windward leg with Samaki still in close contention, meanwhile No Compromise and Icon, both short of crew and taking the white sail route, were making good progress through the fleet.
At the windward mark Esk Argo finally managed to recover from her earlier misdemeanour to round the mark first and with a smart hoist surf off back to Sandsend, leaving Beeste struggling with her kite.
Esk Argo consolidated her lead to finish well ahead with No Compromise, having sailed a good race to finish second only to be relegated to the back after handicapping.
Icon and Ace had their own tussle for fourth place with Icon sneaking in two seconds ahead.
Results, Class A: 1 Esk Argo, 2 Beeste, 3 Icon; Class B: 1 Samaki.

ICON led the fleet away on the coastal race to Boulby with a smart spinnaker hoist in the pleasant south easterly breeze.
Samaki once again gave a good account of herself to lead the accompanying pack to the bell buoy before heading north.
The wind slowly died to the slightest of zephyrs with Esk and Beeste heading out and the remainder going inshore.
The lead changed several times before everyone grouped close together again off Staithes.
Esk was the first to benefit from the developing wind to streak off to Boulby while Beeste came through the fleet to round in second marginally ahead of Icon.
The wind freshened to a good force four with Esk maintaining her lead to the finish.
However, even after a detour to check out west, Beeste had done enough to win easily after handicap.
Results, Class A: 1 Beeste S Lockwood, 2 Icon N & L Williamson, 3 Esk Argo J & D Theaker; Class B: 1 Samaki.
