SCALING Dam hosted a prestigious event when the Royal Yachting Association's (RYA) North Zone Championships took place.
The event is one of the UK's most coveted sailing events for young people aged 8 to 16.
The championships, which attracted almost 100 youngsters from across the region, went without a hitch with fresh winds and sunshine on the Saturday, providing perfect sailing conditions and lighter winds on the Sunday proving to be a real test of tactical racing skills.
Support for the event was provided by club members and by local organisations including Northumbrian Water, Surfstore, TridentUK, Coates Marine and NYCC's East Barnby Outdoor Centre.
Event manager Richard Clayton said: "Being chosen by the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) to host a major event like this was a great honour and underpins Scaling Dam's position as one of the premier sailing clubs in the north of England.
"Seeing almost 100 sailors on the water at one time was a very impressive sight.
"The RYA uses events like this to select talented sailors for its structured training programme which aims to produce sailors capable of winning medal for Great Britain in future Olympic Games.
"This event provided 19 local youngsters with an opportunity to pit their sailing skills against the very best in the north of England.
"Scaling sailors performed well throughout the event with honours going to Kieran Hill (13), who finished second in the topper class and Georgia Booth (11), who was the first girl to finish in the optimist class."
Scaling Dam is a friendly family sailing club keen to welcome anyone, irrespective of age or ability or disability, who is interested in dinghy sailing or windsurfing.
